The Moment My Perspective Changed
One of my first clients was a woman recovering from a stroke. She was frustrated and angry, often snapping at me. I initially took it personally and almost dropped her as a client. Then, out of the blue, on what I was planning to be my last visit with her, she broke down crying. She admitted she was impatient with her own body and hated feeling helpless. That was the moment I decided she would be my permanent client. I realized that anger is often a disguise for fear. She was afraid for her future, fearful of losing her independence, and extremely vulnerable. From then on, I saw my role not just as a caregiver but as someone who could help her reclaim her independence in any small way possible. Since then, I have come to understand human behavior very differently.
